  • Milling, drilling, and CNC cutting carbon fiber parts

    Due to the need for manufacturing functional carbon fiber parts precisely and wasting as few materials as possible, it makes sense to machine carbon sheets on a CNC milling with correctly calculated milling paths. In addition, you can make precise drill holes and cut-outs in the carbon sheet during the same operation. When the shapes to be cut out have roundings, it saves material to mill them out. By doing so you get much cleaner cutting edges than using a padsaw. After cutting out the shapes of the carbon parts you can even engrave the material on the same machine.  

    Machining carbon is not possible with conventional tools. If you want to cut CFRP to size, you get the best results by milling the composite material on a CNC machine. utilizing a milling tool on the High-Z router you can cut carbon fiber sheets to size, make cut-outs and drill holes with circular milling.

    Drilling Carbon – Circular milling of “drill holes” with counterbores

    The High-Z router makes precise drill holes with counterbores which you could also make with a drill and a countersink. However, it is difficult to drill holes with equal depth and distances. A computer-aided machine can drill the holes faster and more precisely than a manual tool.

  • How do we design Carbon Fiber Laminated Sheets?

    (0°/ 90° degree layup and a quasi-isotropic layup. )
    Standard layup for carbon fiber sheets, which is suitable for most applications. 0°/90° carbon plates offer excellent strength and stiffness in the axial and transverse directions. Our 0°/90° carbon fiber plates are evenly distributed, unidirectional carbon fiber prepreg, in the 0°, 90° orientation. Quasi-isotropic (0°/90°/+45°/-45°)—Special Strength Layup In order to meet higher demanding applications, we use 0°/90°/45° unidirectional cloth fabric balanced and symmetrical lay-up when producing carbon fiber laminates sheets. This addition of 45° layup is more rigid in that axis. Our quasi plates are evenly distributed, unidirectional carbon fiber prepreg, in the 0°, 90°, +/-45° orientation, If only 0 and 90-degree carbon fiber layers are used, the laminate is less expensive to manufacture, but weak along the 45 degrees diagonal.
    When the carbon fibers are aligned only in the 0 and 90-degree directions, the deflections in off-axis bending and pulling are up to 50% higher compared with the quasi-isotropic carbon fiber plate. For the majority of typical applications, 0/90 degree sheets will do. If stiffness along the 45-degree axis is required, quasi-isotropic carbon fiber sheets have superior performance.

    Molds Depending on production volume, we provide 3- or 5-axis milling of plugs and molds. For this purpose, we most often use aluminum or tooling boards (polyurethane or epoxy).

    For series production, one model (called the master) undergoes milling to be later used for delivery of 10, 20 ,or more composite molds. Molds are delivered using a pre-preg technique (carbon fiber molds) or manual laminating – if pre-preg or baking with an autoclave is not required.
